E.Coli (Escherichia coli) is a type of bacteria that normally lives in the digestive tract of humans. Some types of E. coli are known to be the cause of UTI.
However, some strains of E. coli are being used to assist bladder management. The strain of E. coli known as “E. coli 83972” is being used by the infectious diseases department at Austin Health to treat recurrent UTI. E. coli 83972 is a non-infectious type of E. coli that is introduced into the bladder. The theory is that by causing an “infection” with a type of bacteria that doesn’t cause any symptoms, other more dangerous bacteria aren’t able to get into the bladder.
This treatment should be discussed with your doctor to find out if it is suitable for you.
